Audio Guide Herzogin Anna-Amalia-Bibliothek

Herzogin Anna-Amalia Library is a true gem among libraries, nestled in the historic city of Weimar. Its roots trace back to a distant past, and its collection is a treasury, boasting more than a million volumes, including rare books and invaluable manuscripts.

Founded in 1691, the library has, over time, become not only one of the oldest in Germany but also one of the most significant. Its name, Herzogin Anna-Amalia Library, pays homage to Duchess Anna Amalia, a pivotal figure in its history. She was a patron of the arts and literature, making substantial contributions to the library's development in the late 18th century.

However, as is often the case, the library's history hasn't been without its challenges. In 2004, Herzogin Anna-Amalia Library endured one of the darkest chapters in its history when a fire ravaged its building and collections. The flames consumed numerous precious books and manuscripts. Yet, thanks to immense restoration efforts and donations, the library managed to reclaim its treasures and continue to serve art enthusiasts and researchers.

What makes this library even more captivating is that it resides within a stunning historical building, which is, in itself, a work of art. Visitors can not only revel in the collection of books and manuscripts but also immerse themselves in Germany's rich cultural history through the numerous museums and galleries housed within the library.
