Haus der Charlotte von Stein Weimar

Audio Guide Haus der Charlotte von Stein

The Charlotte von Stein House is a baroque residential building located on the south-eastern border of the old town of Weimar. It was the home of Johann Wolfgang Goethe's girlfriend Charlotte von Stein for 50 years, which gave the house its name. The house is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Goethe moved to Weimar in 1775 at the invitation of Prince Karl-August and became involved in various public affairs such as administration, finance, mining, road building, recruitment of soldiers, education, museums, and theatre (founded in 1791). He was also involved in organising balls and hunts and was prime minister.

At the beginning of his stay in Weimar, Goethe was still unable to get rid of his feelings for his former lover, but his acquaintance with Mrs von Stein helped him to forget this love. He had seen her portrait before and was struck by her beauty. Charlotte von Stein was a 33-year-old baroness, at that time already the mother of seven children, the wife of the Stalmeister and a former court lady. She was an intelligent and educated woman who was interested in literature, drawing and singing. Baroness von Stein was a colourful representative of noble society. She won Goethe's heart and became his close friend and lover. But their relationship was not easy. Charlotte was from the highest circle, and Goethe was a commoner. In addition, she was married, which made their love unacceptable. In 1786 they parted, but maintained their friendship for the rest of their lives.

It is worth noting that in the city cemetery there is a tomb of two great poets Schiller and Goethe, from which Baroness von Stein - Goethe's favourite woman - is buried nearby.
